Rick Hammond is an Equity Shareholder with the law firm of Johnson & Bell, Ltd., and he co-chairs the firm’s Insurance Coverage Group. He concentrates his practice on matters relating to property insurance coverage, arson and fraud and bad faith litigation. Prior to becoming an attorney, he was head of the Illinois Department of Insurance’s Chicago office and held several managerial positions in the insurance industry.
Rick is Past-President of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, formerly served on the faculty and Board of Directors of the Insurance School of Chicago, and he is a columnist for the International Association of Special Investigative Units’ magazine, “SIU Awareness.” Mr. Hammond also currently serves as Legal Counsel for a national insurance trade association, the Insurance Committee for Arson Control.
Rick is a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, past Illinois State Representative of DRI, former Vice-Chair of the Property Insurance Law Committee of the American Bar Association, and former Chair of the Insurance Law Section Council for the Illinois State Bar Association.
In 2008, Mr. Hammond was selected by the Lexis Nexis Insurance Law Center to receive its Honorable Mention “Insurance Lawyer of the Year Award.” He was recognized by Lexis Nexis and his peers as one of two attorneys who did the most in 2008 to effectively advance insurer positions and improve insurance law from the perspective of insurers.
In May 2013, Rick was elected to the American College of Coverage and Extra-Contractual Counsel, a peer reviewed organization established in 2012, and that is comprised of preeminent coverage and extra-contractual attorneys in the United States and Canada.
